Re-register a birth

Before you start

We're now taking requests for the re-registration of births. A re-registration can only take place mainly in 3 circumstances.

  1. If the biological parents were not married to, or in a civil partnership with each other when the child was born, and have not married or formed a civil partnership with each other since.
  2. If the biological parents have married or formed a civil partnership since the original registration took place, they are required to re-register the birth.
  3. On the Authority of the Registrar General - this is where you have been contacted by the General Register Office and they have provided confirmation the child can be re-registered.  You will be given a case reference number which starts with the letter "C".

You must download and complete the relevant form from the GOV.UK website before starting this form.

If your request does not meet the above criteria, please email our office with information on your circumstances and we'll give advice - registeroffice@lambeth.gov.uk.
